Spotted Spurge, Euphorbia maculata

This annual weedy plant is characteristic to many sidewalks during the summer. These dicots are native to North America and are members of the Euphorbiaceae family. They have many close relatives, but can sometimes be identified by the deep red spot in the center of their leaves. The spotted spurges grow a taproot but extend laterally aboveground, which is why these are often known as prostrate spurges. They begin growing in spring but become dormant after the first frost.
